翻訳のキモかツボか!? “face the music”

こんにちは。イギリス在住会議通訳者の平松里英(rielondon)です。

つい先日、仕事(翻訳)で出てきた英語表現のなかで気になったもの。 “face the music” というフレーズです。

文脈を理解するために前後の文を入れると、”you’ve got to be there – answering all the questions and facing the music.” というコンテクストでした。
(ちなみに、そのオリジナルの映像はこちら

オンラインの英和辞書で意味を調べてみると、「自分の言動の報いを受ける」「結果を潔く受け止める」「困難に立ち向かう」・・・とあります。

でも、なんで music なんだ?英日の辞書ではわかりづらい、語源が載っていないようなので英英辞典で検索してみます。

Cambridge Dictionary では 意味は to accept criticism or punishment for something you have done とあり、The Free Dictionary によると、その語源は、”Most authorities believe it refers to a theatre’s pit orchestra, which an actor must face when he faces what can be a hostile audience, but some hold it comes from the military, where a formal dismissal in disgrace would be accompanied by band music.” (劇場で楽団が入っているピットを指しており、俳優が敵対的な観客に直面・対峙しなければならないというところから来ているという見解が多いが、別の語源としては、軍隊用語から来ており、正式な懲戒免職処分になった場合には、(軍)楽隊の音楽が付き添う。)
とあります。

この罰は(イギリスの)軍隊では Rogue March と呼ばれ、”a derisive tune played to accompany a person’s expulsion from a regiment, community, etc.” ということであるが、現役で軍楽隊に長い経験者いわく、music と drumming は明確に区別されており、後者は signalling =合図としての意味合いが強い。ここで music とはっきりしている以上、drumming ではない。music と drumming は一緒くたになって使われることはない、とのこと。つまり、face the drumming/drummer とは言わないというのです。
Phrase Finderによるとこうありました(以下)。”The phrase ‘face the music’ has an agreeable imagery. We feel that we can picture who was facing what and what music was playing at the time. Regrettably, the documentary records don’t point to any clear source for the phrase and we are, as so often, at the mercy of plausible speculation. There was, of course, a definitive and unique origin for the expression ‘face the music’ and whoever coined it was quite certain of the circumstances and the music being referred to. Let’s hope at least that one of the following suggestions is the correct one, even though there is no clear evidence to prove it.” (要約すると、どの文献でも明らかにされていないので、おそらくこうだろうという可能性の高いところで落ち着くほかないのだが、誰が考えついたのか、音楽が引き合いに出されているところから状況がかなり特定のものであったことがうかがえる。いずれも、正解たる根拠をはっきりと証明できるわけではないが、以下に提案されているもののなかに正解があることを期待しよう。)その「提案」は三つ。くわしくは以下。
“A commonly repeated assertion is that ‘face the music’ originated from the tradition of disgraced officers being ‘drummed out’ of their regiment. (1つ目、軍隊で不名誉な除隊を言い渡された時「Drummed Out (ドラムアウト)
」といって、(小)太鼓が打ち鳴らされ、不名誉な理由で除隊された個人を、一番若いドラマー(ボーイ)が出口付近に控えていて、おしりを蹴飛ばして追い出される、というような、軍隊の伝統らしい、これが語源という説。)A second popular theory is that it was actors who ‘faced the music’, that is, faced the orchestra pit, when they went on stage. (2つ目、舞台の足元にあるオーケストラピットのことで、舞台に立ち幕が開いたら役者は何が何でも音楽のほうを向き=観客に対峙しなければならないという意味。)A third theory, less likely but quite interesting none the less, was recounted with some confidence by a member of the choir at a choral concert I attended recently in Sheffield. It relates to the old UK practice of West Gallery singing. This was singing, literally from the west galleries of English churches, by the common peasantry who weren’t allowed to sit in the higher status parts of the church. The theory was that the nobility were obliged to listen to the vernacular songs of the parishioners, often with lyrics that were critical of the ways of the gentry.(3つ目、これは可能性が低いらしい。また長いので、ここでは要約を割愛する。ごく簡単に補足するとイギリスはシェフィールド、イングランドの教会の合唱に関係があるという説。)”Drummed Out に関しては、連隊によってやり方が違うらしい。楽隊全体だったり、ドラマーだけだったり、他にもパターンがあるらしい。ここまできても、やはり、どこから来ているのか、わからない。なぜ音楽なのか?いまひとつどころか、ますますわからなくなってきた(汗)
The more I learn about this phrase, the less sure I get… Why MUSIC?? Why does it have to be music, where is it coming from, anyway???

Fred Astaire で有名なミュージカル『Top Hat』のなかで、Cole Porter 作曲の “Let’s face the music and dance.”  という曲もあった。ただ、このフレーズは使用が確認されたのは、少なくとも1850 年代にまで遡るらしい。

言語学者で、イギリス在住の日英のベテラン翻訳者に相談してみたところ、「Almost all other early citations are American. Sadly, none of them give the slightest clue as to the source, or reason for, the music being faced.
WorldWideWords にはさらに詳しい説明や例文があります。調べるまで、私はなんとなく「rough music」を指していると思いました。つまり、悪いことをすると「音楽という形の刑罰に晒される」といった感じかな。他のサイトでも「a South Asian version of the collectively imposed ‘rough music’ in traditional English villages which gave rise to the expression ‘face the music’」と書いてありました。」とのことでした。

いずれにせよ、よく使われる表現であるにもかかわらず、その語源が明らかになっていないのは、フラストレーションが溜まるとも言えるが、興味が尽きない。いろんな言語や文化から語彙も表現も取り込んでいる、いかにも英語らしい、と思った。
To me it sounds typical English which have imported expressions, phrases and words into their vocabulary over the centuries. Yes, it might be frustrating but it is very intriguing and it stays intriguing.ぜひスッキリしたいとおもうので、他にも説がある、など、ご意見感想をお待ちしています☆
Please drop me a line, should you have something else to contribute.
